I had nearly forgotten about reviewing the totally awesome Yum-O! Bakeware 5-Piece Bakeware Set I received from CSN's cookware.com.

I received it about a month or so ago, but luckily they sent a reminder so here is my review:

This is the BEST bakeset you will ever buy. It is totally worth the $49.99 price tag in my opinion!
It's durable, but not too heavy and has really nice orange grippers on the sides so it is easy to handle. It's very easy to clean as it is non stick and boy, do they ever mean it when they say non stick - NOTHING sticks to it! Not brownies, not cornbread, not chicken, nothing! It cools quickly, which is important when you are baking with little ones.
This set would make a fantastic Christmas present for any baker in your life. I have used every pan in the set for numerous baked foods including brownies, chicken, cornbread, cake, potatoes, cookies etc. It doesn't burn the foods - unless the timer has gone off and no one has bothered to tell you :) - and I have yet to find something that sticks to it! It is recommended you do not soak these pans, they are dishwasher safe but you cannot use those little detergent tabs on them, the tabs will scratch off the finish.

Apparently, I'm wrong about the spelling of Kenzi's name on NCIS LA. My brother informs me it is Kensi. I have actually seen it both ways on the official site though. I think he might be right, Kensi seems to be more prevalent. Oh, well, pronounced the same anyway.

fanfiction ramblings

I've been trying to write a NCIS LA fanfic for the past couple weeks. I had a really good beginning and several pages written and then my brother had to go and borrow my notebook. He lost it of course. The consequent rewrites just haven't been the same. Maybe I should just try another fanfic or something. I had a pretty good storyline - I hadn't seen this one before. Well, actually, no, someone recently put up a similar one but mine is way better. For one thing, I can spell, use proper grammar and I actually know how to write. Sometimes people really really shouldn't write! I never tell them that though unless they make some kind of gigantic mistake concerning the characters. G's name is just that, G, he has no actual name! And yes, it ought to be capitalized. Seriously, doesn't anyone pay attention anymore? If you are going to write a fanfiction based on a tv show, at least get the spellings of the names right! I can't tell you how many people spell Kenzi wrong. Yes, there are several different spellings, that's true but only one in the case is correct! People annoy me.....

Books

I have just begun a new series of books called the Zion Chronicles. They are by Bodie Thoene who has been a favorite writer of mine for several years. Some of her books are difficult to read because of the subject matter but you come away from the book with a new understanding of that particular time because they are so well researched.
The Zion Chronicles are not as difficult to read as her other series. This one is set in the late 1940s, during the early days of Israel. I've only read the first book and I'm hoping the library has the rest but I'm not sure they do - the library tends to not have the whole series of most books. I do have an Amazon gift card though.... I could just buy them!
Has anyone else read these books? What's your opinion?

Testing, testing!

I am thinking of doing some test knitting. The only real problem with it is that I have a hard time following patterns. It isn't that I don't understand them or can't follow directions, it's more I'll start thinking, "hey, what if I did this instead, what would it look like?" Or "What about doing that stitch instead of this one?" and etc.
This could be problematic if I decide to do any. I've looked at a few things that people have asked to be test knitted and for the most part I haven't had the right yarn. Also, truthfully, if I'm going to put that much time and effort into something, I'd like to be able to keep it and some folks want the item. So, I can't keep it and I don't always get paid. That's not worth it to me, sorry.
For those who do pay, they generally want someone who can do fancy work or really fast work and I can do neither. Well, I can do fancy, I'm willing to learn, but it won't necessarily be done when they want it! I can also do fast when I really want to, like a few weeks back I challenged myself to finish an entire sock in a week and I did it. I was even sick at the time! However, I still haven't finished it's mate so maybe that learning 2 at a time thing is something I should SERIOUSLY look into!

To Spin or not to Spin

I want to learn to spin. I really do except it's going to cost a bare minimum of twenty bucks to learn how. And what if I hate it? That's twenty bucks I could have spent on yarn!
I have done some research into it and thought I'd start with a spindle because A, I know where to buy one and B, they're not terribly expensive, around $10-$15 usually. Spinning wheels cost a couple hundred or more and I've no idea where to get one anyway.
Roving isn't hard to get either, I know lots places to get it - Knitpicks is the cheapest but that's for the bare yarn. I do know a few people on Ravelry who sell roving though.
Still, going to cost some money. Is it worth it or not?

Mittens Part Two

I got interrupted during my last post so here is the other half:

6. Long knitted gloves with cables How elegant are these? Long nearly elbow length and cables - easy to make and super comfy,too!

7. Sideways Gloves These have a unique construction using short rows and garter stitch. An quick knit and one that is also easy to take along with you since it is small and fits easily into a project bag.

8. Elegant Arm Warmers These are fingerless but so pretty I just had to include them! They're based after a 1950s pattern and use cables.

9. Fun Fur Gloves Again, fingerless but I know I have quite a few balls of Fun Fur and similar yarns in my stash and I'm always looking for a way to use it. This would be an excellent way, maybe even make them longer so they're like evening gloves and give them as a present to a little girl for Christmas. Most little girls like dress up!

10. Woodsie Gloves The third fingerless mitts but I really like these because the cuff is so long over the fingers. Plus you can fold it over if you'd like. And they're "manly" enough you could make them for a guy too!

So, that ends my mittens series such as it was. What shall I do tomorrow?

Mittens

It has been quite chilly the past few days, dropping down to the low 30s at night and the high 50s during the day. Just last week it was in the 70s and 80s! I've been pulling out my handknits like my fingerless gloves (made from my "Fruity Oat Bar" yarn from the Firefly swap) and my rainbow skull hat (from the Pirate swap). But the problem with fingerless gloves - my fingers are still cold! So I did a search on Ravelry and found some really nice mitten patterns.
1.Vinterblomster mittens These are colorwork gloves and very pretty. The pattern comes in English and Norwegian.
2. Egyptian Mittens These are another colorwork pattern, a bit more traditional. It only comes in Finnish but the chart represents every stitch and so shouldn't be too hard to follow if you can read charts.
3. Classic Mittens These are the typical gloves that are easy to make up since there is no fingers to knit on tiny needles. Also easy to customize with stripes, a pattern, whatever
4. Baby Mittens These are super cute to make if you've a small baby! Plus they don't take much yarn so you can easily make a pair out of leftover yarn.
5. Yarn Harlot Thrummed Mittens The new "hot" thing seems to be thrummed mittens and these are from the Yarn Harlot - one of my favorite knitting people!

Hannah

Today is my sister Hannah's birthday. She is nine years old already! She's almost as tall as me,too!
Generally, she celebrates in her birthday in the summer for a couple different reasons. 1, everyone else has a July birthday (except for me, Benjamin and Andrew) and 2, that's when our grandparents visit. So she likes to have her party with Grandma and Grandpa. Grandpa usually takes them all out to lunch, buys them ice cream, then we go home and open their presents. They enjoy having their grandparents around for the party.
This year for her 9th birthday we baked a chocolate cake and made frosting - the first frosting I've ever made that didn't look like glaze! Then Mom decorated it with lollipops and smarties. 9 of each :) Parker has a friend sleeping over so it was a bit more of a party with a friend here.
I intend to make Hannah a pair of fingerless gloves but they're not meant for her birthday exactly, just because I owe her a pair since I made Bekah some. Hannah tells me she wants black, I'll have to see if I have enough black anywhere to do a pair in. Mostly, I like bright, bold or jewel colors in yarn, I don't have much black or brown or the like. We'll just have to see!

New kitty!!

Today we got a new kitten! Her name is Amber and she seems to be around 4 months old. Her previous owner was going to take her to the pound :( Well, we just can't have that can we?? So she came home to us. Surprisingly, she is doing well enough against the onslaught of five little kids. I believe she is hiding under the couch now LOL Our other two cats spend all day under a bed or the couch and come out after bedtime - Amber will learn soon enough to do the same.
Amber is a black and brown tiger with a long tail, quite different then our other kitten Bridget who is black, brown, and white calico and a bob tail! They are about the same age tho. It will be interesting to see how they grow up together.
Our older cat, ha, she is is really only about eight months old, is Rainbow and it's fun to watch her with Bridget - she hasn't really interacted much with Amber yet. The girls fight every night and it's comical to watch especially when Rainbow is done fighting, she just lays her arms across Bridget and watches the baby squirm. Like, haha, I'm bigger then you and I win!
I don't believe Amber's paws have touched the carpet since we brought her home - every kid in the house keeps carrying her around! They just love kitties!

My Day

Yesterday was all cold and rainy all day long. Seriously, the rain never let up once. Today's weather was cold and grey. Some rain, not even half as much as yesterday.
So, I had to get up early to go to the dentist. So, I'm dragging myself out of my nice warm bed - it's cold outside after all - and he calls and tells me that he's closing the office today because of a death. Well, for him, that must suck but for me? I get to go back to bed!
Then, after everyone got up, the baby wants to go for a walk. In the cold. So, I have to find shoes, socks, jackets, etc. While doing this I found my sewing needle! Yay! So now I can make the velvet project bag for my swap partner that should've been done a week ago. It doesn't have to go out yet, I plan on mailing December 1, that'll give it plenty of time to reach its destination.
We went to the library. We live in small town, the new books are often old books before they get here. But today, I found a new James Patterson called Don't Blink. I believe it is actually a few months old but whatever, I haven't read it. Yay!
We made lunch, made brownies, ate the brownies. Got a good new brownie recipe out of a Rachael Ray magazine but it didn't turn out quite right this time, I don't know why. Then the mail came. I love getting mail especially when it includes A BRAND NEW KNITPICKS CATALOG!
Fun, fun, fun. I spent a lot of time going thru it. I think I'd like to try some colorwork with the Palette yarn - the ornament kit looks fantastic and not too hard. They also have some really nice new sock patterns that be great to work up. No new yarns this time around but in the spring there will be.

Sock Yarn

I bought some Stroll yarn from Knitpicks for my birthday in May. I really like it. The yarn I chose is from the Multi line - called Meadow. It's purple, green, and brown. It's really rather funny, one sock striped perfectly and the second one did not even though I got an entire sock and the leg of the second sock out of one skein. I have tiny feet :)
It was quite easy to work with. I was using Magic Loop and it was my first time using that particular method. Now I think I prefer it over DPNs but both are good to know. It did not split or untwist while I was knitting, which is a good thing! Some of the cheaper sock yarns will do that.
I've been wearing the socks since July or August and they have held up well enough. You can wash and dry the socks, which is why I chose this yarn, I don't want to handwash socks (but I do have an awesome merino/alpaca that a friend hand dyed for me with "Kaylee" colors that I can't wait to use!).
My only real problem with it is the yarn relaxes. My socks no longer fit exactly like they did when I first made them. I asked about this on Ravelry, since the socks had stretched and sometimes it is hard to wear with them with shoes, and apparently with Stroll you should make your socks a bit small to start with because the yarn stretches. Also, you should machine dry instead of letting them hang to dry like I was at first.
Really, for the money, you can't get better sock yarn! I really want to try their Stroll HandPainted, they just came out with some really beautiful and bright colorways that I'd love to have. Also, Gloss Sock sounds just wonderful - it is a merino/silk blend that I bet feels great on the feet. Imagination has some great colorways, that's a merino/alpaca blend that I've heard is like heaven. Haven't tried it for myself yet though. I really want to use the Felici yarn,too!
Stroll is a great yarn to use for all sorts of things, not just socks. Sweaters, shawls, hats, it's a good all purpose yarn :)

NaBloPoMo

I've decided to join NaBloPoMo. Don't know what that is? It's National Blog Posting Month! It's similar to the National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo. Basically, you blog every day and during November this gives you an entry to win a prize,too. You want more info? Click HERE. I've also added a button on the side, that is hopefully linked like it should be.
If you don't have a blog you can also blog on their site as opposed to signing up for a blogger, wordpress, or livejournal blog. I used to have a livejournal but decided to leave because 1, I wasn't able to post the way I wanted to, and 2, they changed their logo to be more gay friendly. Seriously, they did. It was a rainbow and they were going on and on about gay marriage. That's not the sort of thing I wanted on my blog so I left. If you don't mind that, it really wasn't a bad blogging community, I did like how it had communities and forums to chat in.
Sometimes, there is a blogging theme of the month. This month's theme is that there is no theme!
Well, that's my first post for November! The dinner buzzer is going off, so I'm going to go check on it :)

Toe Up Heels

I've been working on my first pair of toe up socks. Wait, that's not right exactly, I did start another pair but had to frog them because the pattern was just too big for my foot. So this is the first pair that is actually gonna be finished. My goal is Sunday, since I started them last Sunday, I want to see if I can complete one sock in a week. However, I have a cold and that is slowing me down!
Anyway, I received a skein of Colinette Jitterbug yarn in a swap and I've wanted to try this yarn for some time now so I was really excited about it! After looking at project pictures of the yarn, I have colorway Mardi Gras, I decided a pattern was just going to be obscured by the bright colors and crazy pooling. That and I don't play well with patterns, especially sock patterns LOL Basically my socks are going to be plain vanilla but with ribbing along the top of the foot, hopefully this will keep them on better as I have problems with socks, storebought or handknit sliding down in my boots and that is very annoying!
Doing the toe up wasn't difficult, I cast on using the instructions from my previous toe up socks, the difference being these are magic loop as I've found I prefer it to DPNs. I've had no problem with the foot but the heel is confounding me!
So I turned to the internet (I've only one sock book and one pattern in it is toe up, that's it!). I could do an afterthought heel but that seemed a bit more work then I wanted to do. I discovered a few different ways of doing the heel but I didn't seem to like most of them (anything that involves x + y = z is evil).
These are the ones I liked best:
Wendy Johnson's toe up sock pattern She's written many sock books so she really knows her stuff! I like her pattern but it involves wrap and turn and I don't have a good track record with that - i.e. my sisters' doll slings that still aren't done.
This site lists several different links to other toe up formulas on the net. Quite handy since it led me to:
Fleegle's Blog This is the one that makes the most sense to me. No wrap and turn, no algebra, just basically a gusset. Gussets, I'm good at! I understand them, I know how to knit them, and it isn't that difficult either! I guess really this isn't a short row heel like I'd originally looked up but it works for me and I understand the instructions, double whammy there :)
Any other good toe up heel instructions out there that I didn't find or list? I'd like to try two at a time toe up next!

I like to blog, I really do. The problem is sometimes I don't want to talk about knitting. So, I've decided to change the blog a bit. I still will talk about knitting - it is why I started the blog after all - but I'm also going to include other things like book/tv/dvd reviews, my ramblings about the coolest names, giveaways (hopefully. Anyone wanna host one?), and maybe some reviews like the upcoming CSN review (No, I did not forget about that - it's coming later this week). Also, anything else I feel like talking about!

Okay, I LOVE knitting socks. They're my favorite thing to knit plus sock yarn is so versatile - you can use it for all sorts of things from socks to hats to shawls. So, when I got the Interweave Magazine e newsletter today I was thrilled to see it all about their new sock magazine. Now, no where in the newsletter does it mention that you have to pay for it. So I click on the link. They want $14.97 for ONE issue??!! Whoa, hold on there! That's a heck of a lot of money for three patterns! You can buy a frigging book on Amazon for that much money, with a lot more patterns in it.

Autumn Knits

I live in Texas. This means actual winter doesn't start until January but fall is already beginning - the leaves are starting to turn and fall and it drops into the 70s at night (yes, I know that isn't cold in the slightest but compared to the over 100 temps it's been, it is quite nice!). I grew up in Florida so it is fun to see fall and winter because in FL there is one season - summer. It does get cool there and occasionally even goes down to the 50s but usually it is not very cold.
One thing I have learned about living here, well, knitting! I learned to knit when I was thirteen, about twelve years ago, but it was an on/off kind of thing because knitted items are not really needed in FL. But here, I knit at least a dozen hats each winter, socks, fingerless gloves (storebought are two for 1.50, I can't make them that cheap but they're too short, so I layer them with the fingerless ones), scarves, a few sweaters and slippers. Nice warm things!! I get cold easily so I wear a lot of knitted items!
I thought I'd share some of my favorite autumn patterns. Inspiration for me to get up off my butt and knit them and inspiration for you because everyone needs new patterns :)
I get a lot of nice patterns from Knitty.com I don't usually make them because so many seem too complicated but I did make (almost finished!) an Annis shawl! I like this pattern called Falling Leaves. i think I'm going to use it for a Halloween knitalong my sock knitting group is doing. If I actually follow the pattern anyway - I have this tendency to just go off and do my own thing. One of these days, I'm going to submit a pattern to Knitpicks IDP program, hopefully. If I can ever write one down well enough for people to understand!
This Clapotis is super popular and can be altered to be made into a stole. Generally, I try to stay away from the super popular patterns but this one is really cute and I can see the potential of a scarf that can also double as a stole, keeps you extra warm that way!
This hat is perfect for fall, one, it's named Foliage and it'd look great worked in fall colors! Dig out those reds, oranges, yellows and browns!
I've been looking for a good sweater pattern for me lately. I've made four sweaters so far - two baby sweaters and two little girl sweaters. I think it is now time for make myself one! I particularly like this one called Mr Greenjeans. It's casual but not too casual, you could wear it running errands or out to dinner. It does have some basic cabling which I've never done but it claims it is simple! You could even, if you wear a medium, make it for just $16 if you buy Knitpicks Woold of the Andes! Wow, now that's a bargain - you can't even find a really nice wool sweater for that price!
This wrap is really pretty - Muir by Rosemary Hill. It's named for California Bay Laurel trees in Muir Woods in northern California. And what better symbol of fall then a tree?
I seem to have a thing for cabled sweaters because I also really love the http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEfall09/PATTholla.php sweater by Jennifer Lippman-Bruno. I particularly like it because it has longer sleeves that fall over the hands - not exactly practical but a feature I love anyway :)
This is a really trendy style - the peacoat! This is the Saity pattern with princess seams and peacoat styling. I don't know if I'd have the patience to knit this but it looks really nice!
I truly love the Victoria cardigan in Knitty First Fall 2010. It wouldn't be too terribly expensive to make if you used Knitpicks yarns, especially the Wool of the Andes. I really think I'm going to use that yarn in my first sweater and maybe I'll choose this pattern!
This would knit up super fast using super bulky yarn!The Jewels Cardigan is a cropped style so popular nowawdays. You could even probably knit it in a weekend. Hmm, people always say that and then it takes me like a month.....
This isn't a warm thing but it is real cute and in honor of my youngest brother's 2nd birthday this weekend I present the Bubby bear pattern. Cute isn't it?? Could also be made into a bunny if you prefer :)

Needles

I've been knitting for about ten years now and I've learned a few things about needles.
One, I prefer wooden. Especially since I have the tendency to leave my knitting on the floor next to my bed - in the winter those metal needles are COLD! So, I prefer wooden or plastic if they're chunky needles.
Two, I like the shorter needles. Around ten inches, I think they are. The fourteen inch needles just seem too long for me. I do have a lot of fourteen inch needles though, all metal!, so I end up using them anyway :) But I do have several pairs of bamboo needles in ten inch length and I love them!
Three, circular needles are easier then straights. You can't lose one of the pair, the project can't come off as easily, and you can straighten your work right on the cable without taking it off the needle so you can see exactly how big something will be - can't do that when it is all scrunched up on a straight!
Four, my favorite needles of all are the Knitpicks Harmonys. I have a set of DPNs for sock knitting from that line. First off, they're only 5 inches long LOVE THAT!! The typical DPN is eight inches - way too long in my opinion. Secondly, they've got this grippy thing going on so my stitches aren't all over the place, but they're also slick and pointy which is great for sock yarn!
Five, plastic needles are easily broken especially the smaller sizes. If it is smaller then a US 8, and plastic, it'll be broken! I had a set of plastic DPNs in a US 4, hmmm, I think I've one or two of them left LOL

Christmas Ideas

Yes, it is already time to start thinking about Christmas presents! Or at least, it is if you make a lot of them as I do :)
Here are some ideas for you:
Argyle iPod Jumper / Cozy This is an adorable "sweater" for an ipod/mp3 player! Could also probably work as a camera case if made a bit bigger or even a cell phone case.
If you've got a bit of time and patience or just like mindless knitting for watch tv (and who doesn't!) what about a Garter Ridge Shawl? Any yarn and needles will do, gauge doesn't even matter too much. If it's too big, you can always say it was meant to be the world's first triangle blanket LOL
Do you have someone you want to make something really special for? What about handknit socks? These Tickled Pink Socks aren't too difficult but do have cables and ribbing to make them just a little more special.
Maybe you've got a guy who is hard to knit for. Aren't most guys? This Hat Fit for a Boyfriend is great for guys! It's a simple fitted ribbed hat and looks really nice. It'd actually work for a girl,too, if you need a hat for a girl!
My sisters are clambering for fingerless gloves and I just love this pattern called Frothy Gothy wristwarmers. They're basically just garter stitch but they've got a frilly edge over the back of the hand that really adds something to the pattern.
Are you or maybe someone you know a fan of Debbie Macomber's Blossom Street novels? I love them myself! Here is Alix's Prayer Shawl you can make for that person. Like the Garter Ridge Shawl you can use any needles and yarn you like and can be made to any size you want.
Do you have a baby? Those big flowered headbands are all the rage now - every baby girl needs one! The "Spring" Baby Headband is really easy and you have a choice of a knit or crochet flower. Or you could just buy one but that kind of defeats the whole making the present yourself thing.
I think these Maidenhair socks are quite special and if you've a bit of time (and you do, it's 4 months away after all), they'd make a very lovely present to someone important to you.

I have Pictures!!

I'm always talking about what I'm knitting (at least, when I blog) but i rarely have pics. This is rather annoying because when I read knitting blogs I love seeing the pictures of the projects and the WIPs. But I finally got some photos off the camera for your viewing pleasure!
This one is of Addison's sweater. Addison is my friend Megan's little girl who was born in April. She doesn't quite fit in the sweater yet but maybe by winter (in Florida? What was I, insane to make a Floridian baby a sweater???). It's made of Joann Sensation Rainbow Boucle which I've had forever, just waiting for the perfect project. Which reminds me, I promised Miss Addison a matching headband....

And here's another of the pretty sweater:
Rather then attempting to match the stripes in the yarn, they're wide fading stripes and hard to match, I just used the same yarn in a plain white for the sleeves. The pattern was the Five Hour Baby Sweater - a misleading title, took me dang near a month! Then again, I was working with a boucle, not exactly the easiest yarn to work with. I do so love the look of boucle though!
On another note, I have joined a most awesome group on Ravelry (okay, actually more then one, I'm sadiekate over there if any of you are there!). This one is called the Odd Ducks Swap and I just was in one for the show Firefly. Way awesome swap let me tell you! I cannot wait to do another. Oh, wait, I don't have to, already signed up for the pirate swap!!
Anyway, here is some of the stuff that came in my box:
"Kaylee" striped sock yarn!! I'm rather excited by this as Kaylee is one of my favorite characters and I've really wanted to try striped yarn. The full quote on the bag is "No Power in the Verse can Stop Me" but you try getting all the sides of a round object in one picture! The blue yarn has been used to make "Hands of Blue" fingerless gloves with a pattern I invented for it. Maybe I'll get it up here one of these days.
The stick is actually a little photoball on a stick to represent River's ice planet on a stick. How clever!
And inside those mysterious boxes:

Inside my "compression coil" I found 10 little magnets, a small crochet hook for picking up stitches, a pin and a Dr. Pepper lip balm! Each little round magnet is for one of the characters and the bigger pin - the big round glare sorry! - reads "you can never have too many socks" So true!
Aren't those strawberries cute? They're filled with lavender and smell so nice :)
The bag had two nail polishes in it - a deep purple and a green. I just love deep colors and green is totally awesome - I have green toenails at the moment LOL

Listen to Your Yarn

Recently I bought my first laceweight yarn. I chose Knitpicks Shadow Tonal in Golden Glow. I was envisioning a bright yellow yarn like I'd seen on Ravelry but mine is more of a honeyish, marigold yellow. Still really pretty and nice but not quite the color I had in mind.
My initial thought, when I still thought it was bright yellow, was the Citron shawl, from the Winter '09 issue of Knitty. Well, first off, wrong color for citrus, secondly, do you realize there are literally over a THOUSAND STITCHES IN THAT SHAWL??!! That was just a whole heck of a lot of stitches for a novice shawl knitter like myself. That would be one of the reasons I like socks, only about 60 stitches to deal with.
Then I thought of my old favorite that I still haven't finished (can't, ran out of yarn) the Travelling Woman. The problem with that is that, technically that takes fingering, not lace. However, it can be done. I just didn't want to fiddle with that since I'd already started one and ran out of yarn.
I was gifted the Sakura lace scarf pattern for my birthday which is a lovely cherry blossom lace pattern. Still, not in my opinion, suitable for yellow. Pink or red perhaps.
Then I thought, well, screw the shawl or scarf, let's make mitts. I found a gorgeous pattern called Swan Maiden Mitts and it is even meant for KP Shadow! But, hey, back up here, my only coat is black. Well, black generally goes with everything but one of the reasons I didn't want a scarf is that I'm not fond of the yellow/black combo. Mitts would be the same problem. Sooo, back to the design board.
A shawl called Hibiscus gave me an idea, I'd design one myself using a pineapple as the focus! Well, I did that on paper. Then attempted to draw the design on graph paper. That didn't work out so well, plus I was worried about running out of yarn halfway thru the shawl.
After hunting around for a few weeks I found this - the Annis shawl, one of the "surprises" in the Spring & Summer issue of Knitty. It is absolutely perfect for this yarn, going to look like a slice 'o sunshine, great because it is always over 100 degrees now!

What I've been up to

You know, I write really great blog posts. I do, I really do. The problem is that I have a habit of writing them in my head and then by the time I get to the computer I have a million other things to do. So, I forget to actually write them. The main problem with that is that, well, no one can read them in my head!
In the meantime, I've been knitting socks. I made a plain vanilla pair out of 100purewool's Granada colorway - greens and yellow. Now I have two more pairs on the needles. Pineapple socks made out of Numma Numma's The Regular in Organic Greens. Very nice yarn and expensive I found out - I won mine in a lovely giveaway :) These are on hold indefinitely until I can get another set of Harmonys as I dropped my needle thru the floorboards of the Dairy Queen playground :( On the bright side, I found my brother's missing schoolbook and my reward will be another set of Harmonys. YAY ME!
I'm also using KnitPicks Stroll Multi in Meadow to Magic Loop socks. Magic loop is a new method for me but WOW is it so much faster then DPNs. I got my needle and yarn last Friday and am already almost done with the first sock! The pattern is of my own making, basically just ribbing and stockinette but a bit fancier then a plain vanilla sock. They're knit cuff down unlike the Pineapple socks.
I like toe up but since Magic Loop is new to me I thought I'd stick to what I knew best for a new method. Socks are like my new favorite project!
I also bought some lace yarn. Shadow Tonal in Golden Glow - don't be mislead by the pic on Knitpicks site, this yarn is not actually that bright and is more of a honey or marigold yellow. Still a really nice yarn tho! I am trying to design a shawl for it, just because I like to make up my own patterns :)

Yarn Shop

I went to New York last week and visited a lovely little yarn shop called Gotta Knit. I didn't buy anything but she had two walls of yarn and quite a selection of needles from Clover and Addi Turbos. It was a very enjoyable time especially since it was the first time I'd ever been to a yarn shop - which she was surprised by! Hey, I live in rural Texas, I'm lucky to have a Hobby Lobby and a Michaels!
If you happen to be in NYC you should visit the Gotta Knit shop. It is just fifteen minutes from Times Square! However, in light of what has happened there in the past few days, I don't know if many people will want to visit Times Square!

Socks

I want to knit socks. Who knows why, since I never actually finish a pair LOL I started a pair for myself six months ago, finished one sock and the other is about 1 inch long. Part of it is that I hate ribbing, especially in the round. And quite possibly the other problem with socks is that they take a while, with tiny needles (I have KnitPicks Harmony in size 2, love'em when I actually bother to use them) and thin yarn.
Most of the time, I like thicker needles, my faves are 15s, and chunky yarn. I like to make hats :) Altho, at the moment, I'm working on a shawl with size 11s and heavy worsted yarn. Also a baby sweater on 9s.
BUT I WANT TO MAKE SOCKS! The hardest part at the moment is that A, I only have 2s, and B, the sock yarn I have, I won it :) Then I found out that Numma Numma yarn is kinda expensive so I want to use it for a special pattern. This is easier said then done.
However, most of the time I don't really use patterns. I like to use them as suggestions, then go off and do my own thing. Add a new stitch here, make that shorter/longer, omit this or that, etc. This would be why I've ended up with quite a few UFOs in my box! That and I really don't have the patience to finish them.
So, I never finish socks because I've already done one, I hate having to do the same thing all over again. I'd like to learn how to do two at a time but I don't have the needles for it. Apparently, it is possible to knit one inside the other on DPNs but it looks really complicated soo, until I've got some money for new needles, it's gonna be one at a time on DPNs. Maybe I'll learn toe up....
Any suggestions for a sock pattern? The yarn is a bright kettle dyed lime green!

Vogue Stitchionary

I really want one of the Vogue Stitchionaries but they're kinda expensive and I don't have the money for it. So when I discovered some of the stitches were online at the Vogue knitting site, I was thrilled! HERE is the link!
I cannot wait to try out the evergreen lace on the shawl I am designing. The yarn is a vintage wool, a dark green, and I'm using copper colored beads. It reminds me of a Christmas tree so I really wanted to try to find some kind of tree or leaf based lace for the lace panel. Not as easy as it sounds nor does it seem possible to find one that looks like it'll work for heavy worsted yarn. Most lace stitches are meant for lace or fingering weight and just don't look right in heavier yarns. However, I'm not too fond of lighter weight yarns so many of my projects are done in heavy yarns, like the shawl I'm working on :) Well, that, and the yarn is just so pretty!

1. Alaskan Purl This chronicles knitting adventures in the 49th state! She has many awesome patterns, some for free. She's also done a contest or two for those who like giveaways (and who doesn't???)

2. Chicken Stitches Funny name, really great blog. Henya has patterns, projects, and also talks about her life as an Orthodox Jew in Brooklyn. She is originally from Russia and also has stories about that as well. Recently Henya set up an etsy shop with stitch markers and they are really beautiful!

3. Dropped Stitches Erin is a a Gardener, Domestic Goddess, Former Pediatrician, Mother, and Wife and also has a great blog! Right now she's running a giveaway for recycled yarn, which she sells in her etsy shop.

4. The Yarn Girls Blog This is not often updated but it is the official blog for the designers Julie and Jordana AKA the Yarn Girls. I love their books!

5. Yarn on the House This is a very new blog but is a wonderful one! Every week Veronika gives away yarn and/or a pattern! Sweaters and Shawls

I have been very busy knitting! First off, I'm working on a baby sweater for a friend of mine. It's knit out of Joann Sensations Rainbow Boucle, which is a very cool yarn. The colorway I'm using goes from dark pink, pale pink, white, pale pink, dark pink. It's the perfect yarn for a little girl!
The pattern is one of the five hour baby sweater pattern. It ain't takin' five hours let me tell you! I've been at it a couple weeks now. But it is nearly done and that is a good thing since Addison is to be born in about three weeks.
Then, I've begun a Travelling Woman shawl. Someone in the RAK group was generous enough to send me two skeins of KnitPicks Palette, enough to begin the project. It's a pretty dark pink color called Lipstick.
It is an awesome lace pattern, the first real lace I've done. Everyone on Ravelry tells me it is a good pattern for a beginner lace knitter and so far they are right! You can find the pattern HERE if you are interested.
And then, I am in several lace and shawl groups on Ravelry right now (guess you can tell what I'm into at the moment LOL) and someone shared a new shawl pattern she had written for her handspun. Now, I don't spin yet, but I do have four skeins of vintage wool that are going to work out great for that pattern!
One of my favorite designers is feministy, who designed the Travelling Woman shawl. She's also got some really cool sock patterns and other shawlpatterns up on her site as well as an etsy shop.

CSN REVIEW

This is my review of CSN.com. Recently, I was asked if I could do a review for them and I said yes :) I chose to review AllModern.com which is a great place to get just about anything you'd need for your home. They have bedroom sets, kitchen items, office supplies and more! For my review I decided to receive Sin In Linen Dreamy Linens Collection Zebra Pink Sheet Set in size twin.
They arrived in just a few short days and came by FedEx, always nice to have a package truck pull up in front of the house!
These sheets are very nice. They were crisp yet soft when I pulled them out of their packaging. The colors are bright and cheerful. Don't let yourself be fooled by the muted shades on the site, they are a much brighter pink then it seems! They have not faded in the slightest, even though they've been washed a couple times.
I did find however, that the sheets was a bit big for my bed as was the pillowcase. I washed them and they seem to have shrunk just little bit but they fit better now.
The sheet set comes with flat sheet, fitted sheet and one standard pillow case (two if you order Full or Queen, King comes with two king size pillow cases). You have a choice of Black/White or Pink/White, depending on the rest of your decor. It is 100% cotton; 200-thread count which makes for a good nite sleep :). And if you have a newer deeper bed they fit mattresses up to 15" deep (this would be why they didn't fit my bed at first, I have an older style twin). Best of all? Bedding is machine wash, tumble dry! I always make sure of that myself - who wants to handwash bedding??
The sheet set I received is 35.00 right now, 30 % off! What a bargain! You want a set too? Just go HERE and choose your size!

Magic Loop and slight changes

If you want to learn a new knitting technique, you have got to check out the KnitPicks tutorials. They are very informative and some even have videos for you who learn best by visual learning. I learned the Magic Loop technique very easily thru their instructions and have been making a set of fingerless gloves for a knit a long over at Ravelry.
As for the slight changes, I'm going to be doing reviews here, not necessarily craft related but reviews and possibly giveaways,too. First up is a review from CSN.com. They're a really cool site that is connected to over 200 stores! Right now they are excited about their kids bedding. There is lots to choose from such as the Kayla collection, with its sweet pastels, and sports bedding such as the Detroit Red Wings collection. There is bedding for every age, from nursery to teen!
I'm also going to be switching my book reviews from Livejournal over here because quite frankly no one ever goes to my Livejournal including me because I just can't do anything there. I can't do buttons or HTML or much of anything so I'm moving the reviews here instead.

Well, I was going to give y'all a little present. An easy baby socks pattern to be exact, but it seems I cannot write it out as easily as I can knit it. Sooo, until I can figure that one out... how about a different post?

I participated in the Ravelympics this year. I've never done that before. Have any of you? I made the River Tam, which can be found HERE. It's not very hard, basically just ribbing and yarnovers but I really really really HATE ribbing. So, I made it anyway and finished with three days to spare :) It turned out really nice and I've been wearing it a lot. I did make a few mistakes, but you wouldn't notice them unless I told you.

It was my first knitting project with alpaca and truthfully, I don't see what the big deal is. It really felt no differently then Caron Simply Soft. Only difference I could tell was when I went to block the hat. The hat, when it is knitted, looks like a triangle until it is blocked. Then, I saw the difference in alpaca. Caron Simply Soft would have just stayed a triangle. But alpaca when damp and stretched over a plate, turns into a flat circle. This is because alpaca fibers stretch out when wet and dry in whatever position you've put them into. Cool, huh?

Sorry for not posting in a while, there are nine people in my house, eight of whom use the computer and it is our television as well. Not enough hours in the day!!

I'm Back

I realized it has actually been a whole month since I posted! I had meant to post at least once a week! Oh well, the holidays and computer trouble prevented that :) And lots of knitting :) And yes, I did finish my sisters' sweaters in time. We decided against the fur trim and just keep them plain white so they'd go with every dress the girls own. That plus the fact the yarn I'd originally bought for the trim is the worst yarn I've ever tried to work with and usually I love working with the novelty yarns so who knows. Luckily I'd bought it on clearance and only spent $2 on it. Maybe that is why it was on clearance? No one else liked it either?
Is anyone who reads this on Ravelry? I've been on it for a while but just now started really getting into it. It's like Facebook for knitters! Except there are no games to play (like Yoville. I spend too much time on Yoville LOL). I'm hoping to start a group on Ravelry for those who read Above Rubies magazine if anyone is interested.
On a really good note, my parents gifted me with $20 to Knitpicks for Christmas!! Yea!! I was very very happy. With any luck my package will be here tomorrow. I'll have to snap a pic of my new yarn and needles to share with y'all. I bought Andean Treasure yarn, has anyone ever worked with that?, and Harmony DPNs because I've wanted to try out Harmonys forever and Knitting Rules by Stephanie Pearl-McPhee. I can't wait to get the package, I'm so excited!! I have plans for the yarn. I want to make this tam, it looks so pretty and big scifi bonus for me, it was named for River Tam of Firefly :)
I also have plans for the DPNs. I bought the size 2s for another set of sock needles because the first pair I'm making is making me mad but I really don't want to frog it but I want to make more socks that don't make me mad! I have two beautiful skeins of sock yarn that I've won in giveaways and I really would like to make them into socks.
As for the book, I read it a couple years back and just loved it, and KnitPicks was having a 40% off sale on all books so I decided it was the best time to buy it!
This all actually came to a bit over $20 (eight dollars over to be exact, with shipping) but since my parents owed me five anyway, they let it slide :) What nice parents I have!

UFOs

Nope, not talking about alien spaceships or Area 51 or anything scifi altho knowing me, I probably could (scifi geek at your service).
Nope, this time UFO means UnFinished Objects. You don't really want to know how long it took me to figure that one out on the knitpicks boards. I seriously couldn't understand what scifi had to do with knitting. Although to tell the truth, I am in a Stargate knitting group on ravelry. Yes, seriously.
Anyway, I thought I'd show my readers a couple of my own UFOs and maybe you can tell me about yours.
This is my first real sock.

Well, sort of anyway. I've got most of the cuff done. I have made exactly one pair of socks before and they were with worsted weight yarn on size 4 needles so they were more like slippers then socks. That's why I'm saying these are my first real socks. They're made of wool from the 100 pure wool company, a nice green and yellow.
This is one of the sweaters I'm making for my sisters for Christmas. It has one sleeve and I just cast on the second earlier today.

Surprisingly, it isn't taking as long as I thought it would to do the sleeves. I've done them a bit differently then the pattern as I was afraid I'd run out of yarn so instead I've picked up stitches around the armholes and knit down from the shoulders instead of from the wrist up. I just didn't want to make three sleeves regular length and then realize I didn't have enough yarn to make a fourth to the elbow. I figure even if they end up with 3/4 sleeves, it is better then that!

I made these really cute fairy hats for my sisters. They're simple,too(the hats, not my sisters)! Just make a triangle wide enough to go around the child's hat and sew together, I used Paton's Cha Cha and Red Heart Super Saver held together, and used stockinette stitch.

Holiday Knitting

I bet many of you have got lots of holiday knitting or crafting to do! So do I, altho I am finding it difficult to keep motivated on one certain project.
What is everyone making? For my grandfather, I knitted a pillow. I always do. I used to sew them but then I got into knitting. He doesn't mind, he just likes getting a new pillow every Christmas :)
For my two little sisters, ages 6 and 8, I am knitting cardigans. This is what they have requested and I found a beautiful pattern HERE and even found some fur yarn on sale (altho I HATE that yarn. I now know why Hobby Lobby quit making it. Stuff is way to hard to work with.) I am using Joann Sensations Rainbow Classic in white to make both. The gauge works up the same as the Patons Shetland Chunky that the original designer used and for a lot less (okay, free for me, thank you grandma and grandpa. I did OFFER to pay for it!). I love the cardigan, how it looks and everything but it is so boring to make! It's simple garter stitch for 20 inches and that's it. Nothing fancy at all, which is one reason why I chose it, but it is SO boring. I have one body done and I'm working on the second but no sleeves on either. Any ideas to make this project less boring so I can get it done before Christmas Day? I promised they'd been done by then!

Well, I officially now have an ArtFire shop. Never heard of ArtFire? Neither had I until recently! It's a lot like Etsy only you don't need a credit card and it is free to use unless you want to post more then 12 items at a time. Obviously, if you pay the 4.95 a month there are more features then if you have a free basic account like me but either way, still a good deal. Unlike Etsy and Ebay they do not charge by the listing or take a percentage of the sale. Sounds pretty good to me! Hopefully I will be able to make some money this way, as I have some big huge news to share!
Totally off topic here but I have to share this! I WON A TRIP TO NEW YORK CITY!!! I get to go to the Rachael Ray show and stay in a fancy hotel in Manhattan!!
Unfortunely they will not be buying any of the stuff one must buy on one's first trip to NYC. Like a tacky NYC shirt :) So I must earn some money to buy one (Among other things anyway)!

Baby Doll Clothes

well, my sister hannah's birthday is next week. she'll be EIGHT, i can't believe it! she is a tomboy but loves her stuffed animals and baby dolls, all of which are boys. i had thought of knitting her up some doll clothes for her birthday but have you ever tried to find a knitting pattern for a boy baby doll outfit??? it isn't easy, let me tell you! i have found a few though for those who are interested.
1. Cabbage Patch Raglan Sweater this is a very nice sweater meant for cabbage patch kids but could be made for any doll, just check your gauge and maybe use different needles and heavier or lighter yarn depending on what size you want.

2. 11" Baby Doll Onesie this is really cute altho i don't crochet very well, i do good to make a straight square! but maybe you crochet and could make this for a little girl in your life.

3. Knit/Doll Clothes okay, this one really doesn't have any boy doll clothes but i LOVE these patterns. they're all for american girl dolls or barbies and so so pretty.

100 pure wool Review and Giveaway!

I have a review and giveaway for any yarn lovers out there! 100 pure wool is an awesome company and an awesome yarn! Okay, I may be a bit biased as I'd never worked with wool before but I truly did love this yarn. The colors are great, very vibrant, and it works up beautifully. I had also never worked with hand dyed yarn before and had heard some horror stories but while it does pool a bit, I personally loved how it looked :) It also probably depends on your pattern and what you're making.

I was given two worsted weight skeins for review. One was called Tropical and the other Poison. The Tropical (second picture) was red and two shades of orange, and the Poison was bright pink and purple. I myself made 2 things. I made a pillow for my grandfather (I make one every year at Christmas for him) out of the Tropical colorway and hat from the Poison colorway that was meant for myself but it ended up for my sister :)

Things I have learned

I have learned a couple things about myself as a knitter recently.
Number one, I may love fancy yarn i.e fun fur but I rarely actually use it. It just sits in a box. The plain stuff that's two dollars at WalMart gets used all the time but the fun yarn never does. This is unfortunate because I have a lot of fun yarn that I LOVE but can never find the right project for.
Which brings us to number two. Number two is that I hate patterns. Well, no not exactly hate. I like the ones that give me the basics like how many stitches to cast on for a sock. I don't like to be told how to make something. If I want to use a different stitch pattern then I will. If I don't like a color then I'll use a different one. I like basic patterns I can change into one of my own. Like for the past couple years I've been making hats to sell. Usually I use the same pattern and whatever colors I want. Sometimes I take specific orders. I HATE those orders! It means I have to do the project exactly how someone else TELLS me to. I don't like being told how to make something, when to make it and how. If you like orders, then make it yourself!

Fun Purse Pattern

Size 17 needles (altho I've also done this with 15s)
1 Skein Red Heart Super Saver yarn, Black (or any color)
1 Skein Patons Cha Cha yarn,mine was white with multi color flecks (Any "furry" yarn will work, I've also used Fun Fur)
1 button
yarn needle
crochet hook - optional
fabric for lining- optional

gauge is not too important, it varies with the size needles and the yarn you use. Most bags will end up being about 8 inches long.

Front

Holding both yarns as 1, cast on 12 stitches. Work in St st until Cha Cha yarn is about gone, with 12 inches or so left. Bind off.

Back

Holding 2 strands of Super Saver together as 1, cast on 12 stitches. Work in garter stitch until back is as long as the front. Knit two more rows, then decrease 1 stitch at each end of the row until 5 sts remain. Make button hole in center. Continue decreasing until no more sts.

Sew or crochet together. Sew button onto front. For a strap you can either make an icord, I find that is stonger, or crochet a strap. The pink fur purse I have pictures of here has an icord strap.

Log Cabin Afghan

this is my log cabin afghan. i used lion brand homespun, joann sensations chenille, mohair i found on clearance at michaels, and some glittery yarn my grandma sent me,and a lot of random acrylic stuff that i'm not sure what it was but it looked nice :)
i did not follow a set color pattern but my only "requirement" was that the same color couldn't touch the same color. it did end up with sort of a color pattern, with earth tones on one side, pinks and purples on another, black, white, and red on one, and the last side was pastels.also, my other requirement was that i wanted the border to be all the same so i bought two skeins of grey simply soft. i played on the side of safety - could've used just one! i think it turned out great! it is about 49 x 36, which is a bit smaller then i'd wanted but it is still a good size.

you can almost see the beads in the chenille here. and the beige next to the blue is the glitter stripe.

i realized i hadnt actually posted anything in a while so here i am :) i've been knitting socks! i've always wanted to do socks but never could figure out how to turn the heel but i finally found a pattern that made sense in a book called The Knitting Way. some of the book is kinda weird but it has some good patterns in it. i'll try to post some pix of my socks soon!

Pink Purse Photos and Pattern

This is a purse I made. It's done out of Joann Sensations something (it's furry and a lot like Lion Brand's Fun Fur except it has beads.) and Lion Brand Homespun. The strap is Icord and quite sturdy. Here's an upclose picture of the furry texture:

It was a simple knit, I believe I did it on US size 11s or maybe 10.5s, but I know it was a bigger needle which is my preference for just about every project. Goes without saying I've never finished socks :) All the pattern is stockinette stitch, I think it was 25 stitches, and just kept going with the fur til I ran out and then switched to Homespun. I did decrease the flap into a triangle simply because I thought it would look better but it would look fine with a square flap,too.

well, nothing new to write! small town - nothing ever happens! i listen to the radio tho, so here is a funny story from kendra at kkyr: a lady in japan went on vacation for three weeks. before she left she turned on her dishwasher to run for one cycle, so she could come home to clean dishes. by the time she got back, it had run 478 times!! wow, that's a lot of water! can you imagine her bill?!
